Race Report - MIJ Round 1
Wednesday, 24th May 2017
For the first time this year the whole team were together to race the first MIJ Downhill race at the Forest of Dean. Amanda and Ben were fresh back from racing Peaty's Steel City Dh race in Sheffield the day before, both getting great results.
Practice started at 9am and everyone was keen to get going. Luckily Si and Phil were running the uplift so we were feeling fresh every time we got to the top of the hill. The track chosen for the race was Ski Run. It was running slightly greasy to start with, but after a few hundred riders it started to dry out and speed up a treat! It was rough in places, being one of the original tracks cut in around 20yrs ago!
Luka and Oscar found a couple of hucks at the top to save a couple of seconds. After a few runs they were nailing them. I decided to play it safe and carry the speed through! I was shown a few nice high lines which probably shaved off a good couple of seconds, so I'm grateful to that person for making my runs much easier!
I think I managed about 9 practice runs thanks to the speedy uplift. Which made all the difference to my race runs. So a big thanks to Si and Phil for getting us up the hill so quick.
Race runs came about fairly quickly after getting some much needed food in us.
Oscar was first down the hill, racing in the Junior category. There were some quick lads in this category so he had his work cut out for him! He wasn't massively happy with his run making a few mistakes, but put in a decent time to come in 3rd. His second run was faster but not enough to hold 3rd position. 4th on the day for Oscar. This is a guy who hasn't raced much downhill, he's one to watch in the future for sure.
Ben was next in the same category as Oscar. With a lot of fast boys, Ben knew he had some steep competition. He had a good steady run, coming in 12th. He knew there was some time to find so pushed hard on his second run. He made a good bit of time back with a much cleaner run, finishing in 10th.
Next up was Geth, racing in Masters. Knowing he had some steep competition, he pushed hard on the first run to get a solid time in. After first runs he was sat in 2nd place behind Ben Deakin. He had a good couple of seconds to claw back but tried to make it count on the second race run. But it wasn't enough to knock Deakin off the top step. 2nd for him and a strong start to the season.
Will was also in Masters. He was on for a decent time, feeling good on the bike, but made a couple of small mistakes which left him down the pack a little. He was determined to do better on the second run. He clipped a tree on one of the technical sections and lost a lot of time. He was super annoyed, but this will only fuel him for the next race. 15th in a stacked Masters field.
Luka and Scott were competing against each other in the senior category. Probably the largest category of the day. Times were tight all through the day. Luka set a decent time in his first run, making no mistakes but making sure he had a solid run in the bag. Scott made sure he had a fast run down also, looking really strong in the bottom section. The both managed to better their first runs with Luka finishing in 7th and Scott 11th.
Last up it was the ladies, Amanda and Emily. With the different women's categories being amalgamated into one category, they were racing against the fast elite women. No pressure! Emily pushed hard in the sections she knew she could do well in and put together two solid runs to finish in 5th place. Amanda feeling good from her previous days racing also put two decent times in to finish 6th. Amazing considering they were racing against some really faster ladies.
A really good solid start to the season from everyone on the team. An amazing days racing. Special thanks to all our sponsors for supporting us this year. See you at the next round!
